Mayor Sullivan Signs Tobacco Tax Increase

On Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 the Anchorage Municipal Assembly voted 8-3 to increase the local cigarette excise tax to $2.21 per pack - a $0.75 per pack increase. This bill also increased the excise tax on all other tobacco products from 45% to 55% of the wholesale price.

Despite opposition from adult tobacco consumers across Anchorage, Mayor Sullivan signed the bill. Effective January 1, 2011 adult smokers in Anchorage will pay $5.22 per pack in local, state and federal excise taxes alone!

Thanks to those of you who contacted you assembly member to voice your opposition to taxes that target adult smokers. We will continue to keep you informed of tobacco related issues that may affect you and hope that you continue to be involved and take action.
